PE Vision Statement

As part of a coastal county as well as one with a strong sporting heritage, the Keskowethyans Multi Academy Trust engages all pupils in adventurous, cultural, creative and traditional sporting opportunities. Our PE curriculum covers 12 sporting disciplines each year and extends these pathways with extra curricula clubs, community links and competition pathways.

Our KS2 PE curriculum offers in excess of two hours of PE each week and KS1 complete two hours. Pupils engage in blocks of sailing, swimming, dance, gym, team and individual sports as well as offsite enrichment days and school camp. We focus on developing enjoyment and confidence through enabling pupils to recognise and celebrate their achievements and encourage their appetite for new challenges. We develop fundamental skills to transfer between sports and nurture valuable life skills in working successfully towards personal goals, group work and leadership responsibilities. A combination of these key beliefs, an enthusiastic staff team, a PE specialist and a county full of opportunity ensures Keskowethyans offer sporting pathways for every pupil to take on into the future.

Pupils in Years 4, 5 and 6 take part in weekly sailing run by the "HRCST" (Helford River Children’s Sailing Trust), in the summer term and first half of the autumn term.  We are very fortunate that our children are able to take part in this fantastic learning opportunity.

Learning to swim is essential for our children, living near the coast and spending so much of their leisure time on the beach and in boats. Swimming for the whole school takes place in the summer term and first half of the autumn term. All pupils work for the STA Watermanship and Distance Awards. These awards give them a great sense of achievement and confidence. We swim at our local holiday park 'Sea Acres'.

Curriculum PE sessions are held twice a week with our PE Specialist and the class teachers.

As a result of Sports Premium funding children at St Keverne have had access to a wider range of after-school Sports Clubs throughout the year. These have been mainly, though not exclusively, organised by Mr Studd – our MAT PE teacher. St Keverne have represented the MAT schools at local cross country competitions and recently won the local netball tournament. We have also been able to extend our range of sporting resources – additional netball and football equipment, for instance – and Mr Studd has also supported members of the St Keverne staff team in developing their own PE teaching skills.

KESKOWETHYANS PERFORMANCE OF 'CATS'

‘Amazing’…’stunning’…’talented beyond their years’…were just a few of the comments from the vast audiences who attended a series of  productions of ‘CATS The Musical’ performed recently by  children from the schools which make up the KESKOWETHYANS MAT.  Over three nights, at the Life and Life Centre in Helston, 130 children from Coverack, Grade Ruan, Manaccan, St Keverne and St Martin Schools wowed packed houses with their beautiful singing and high energy dance routines. The performances, inspired by the works of T S Eliot, and Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical, kept the audience captivated from beginning to end.  ‘Very privileged to have been in the audience tonight – those children had a fantastic time and performed so well!’,  commented one spectator. ‘So moving – such energy, timing and enthusiasm right to the end. Unbelievable and unforgettable.’

The performances were the culmination of a series of dance workshops led by local dance teacher Jules Praed, and were facilitated by Government Sports Premium funding. Jules Praed said: ‘The children have been totally amazing with their commitment and enthusiasm for these performances. They have learnt highly complicated and intricate dance routines and performed them with skill and real dedication. It has been a huge pleasure working with each and everyone one of them over the past ten weeks.’

Headteacher of the KESKOWETHYANS MAT, Tom Harman commented: ‘It has been an exhausting few weeks for pupils and staff involved in these performances of CATS…but every second has been worth it. Having seen the West End version of CATS I felt this would be a venture that would inspire and engage the children who attend the KESKOWETHYANS MAT schools and they certainly responded in a very professional manner to everything we asked them to do. They learnt many different dance routines and a whole variety of songs from the original stage show, and over three nights performed to an exceptionally high standard. All of the shows were sold out – in excess of 600 tickets – and we could have done this several times over, so positive was the response. A huge amount of credit must go to Jules Praed, who led the dance sessions, and to the staff in all of the schools for their support, but in particular to the children who were all stars.'

KESKOWETHYANS ENRICHMENT DAY AT BF ADVENTURE

The second of our PE Enrichment Days was a huge success - our seventy plus Y3 and 4 pupils worked in mixed school activity groups on a range of different tasks, many of which had a strong but subtle emphasis on team building. None of these problem solving activities could be completed individually and success required sharing ideas and effort, listening to each other and working together.  The children also took part in abseiling, climbing, archery and firing a huge catapult.  Pupils tested their wit, tolerance, bravery and trust to complete the adventure day.  The activities were selected to build on the experiences and opportunities ahead at this year’s school camp, in June.

We were able to provide this activity day from the Sports Premium funding we receive.  A big thank you to Mr Studd, our PE Specialist and all the staff at BF Adventure.

KS2 SUMMER CAMP

In June 2015, KS2 children from across the Keskowethyans MAT spent an action packed couple of days at BF Adventure.  The children slept in tents and cabins and enjoyed lots of delicious meals, cooked by school staff.

They took part in a range of activities including kayaking, den building, bush craft, abseiling, orienteering, rock climbing and assault courses.

There were lots of team games which, once again, provided an opportunity for the children to spend time with their friends from other Keskowethyans schools - something they all look forward to when our five schools come together.
